Those of you who read this blog regularly will know I’m a frequent user of CakePHP, but with the recent disturbance in the CakePHP world, maybe it’s time to have another look at the Framework market.
I’ve used the Zend Framework before, but never on a production job. There are a lot of additions and improvements since I first looked at version 0.9, most of which appear to be in the areas I found it lacking.
Maybe now is the time for a switch, maybe not. Only time will tell.

Zend Framework is not a rapid development framework (RAD). Depending on the size of your sites/projects, it may be overkill. It takes quite a bit of time and thought to set it up properly. It is very powerful and more open than CakePHP, but at the price of having to do more coding yourself. It is great, but not for every project, just like CakePHP, or any framework or platform.

I have yet to understand why people are freaking out that 2 out of the countless developers have left. Cake still has mark story, one of the main contributors.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not freaking out, just double-checking the lay of the land.
The fact that gwoo and nate have left is not so much an issue of quality, more that the direction of the project may change with a change of leadership.
It’s probably the case that it’s business as usual, but worth keeping an eye on nonetheless.

What Miles said. The other devs (and the community) have been there long enough to ensure the direction stays relatively coherent with what has been done in the last year(s).
That being said, direction change does not have to be a bad thing. Future releases of CakePHP will not support PHP4 anymore even though PHP4 support has been one of the core “feature” of the original CakePHP (1.1/1.2), that’s a direction change, but not a bad one if you ask me
Oh and anyways, it’s not like CakePHP is going to stop working on your server in a week!

The direction of the CakePHP project is not changing. We plan on supporting and growing the community and improving the framework iteratively. So its going to continue being business as usual in my mind. Thanks Miles for the vote of confidence

Mark, thanks for taking the time. Glad to hear that the plans for the future haven’t changed.
